Quick answer: there is no single visa called “business visit visa” for every case. In practice a business visitor enters the UAE on one of two routes. Either the visitor applies for a visit visa to explore business opportunities (Dubai’s GDRFA lists this service, with no UAE sponsor or host required), or a UAE company or resident sponsors an entry permit through the ICP or GDRFA system. Both give a short stay for meetings, exhibitions, site visits or contract signing. Neither allows the visitor to take a job.
This guide explains the difference, who can apply, what documents are needed, how long the visa lasts, what the visitor may and may not do, and what happens if the stay runs over. Figures in this article come from the official ICP and GDRFA service pages as read on 7 October 2026. Always check the live service page before you apply, because fees and limits change.
What is a UAE business visit visa?
Direct answer: it is a short-stay entry permit for a person who travels to the UAE for business purposes, not to work and not to live.
Typical reasons for a business visit:
- Meeting a supplier, buyer or distributor.
- Attending an exhibition, conference or trade show.
- Visiting a factory, warehouse or port.
- Signing a contract or attending a board meeting.
- An auditor, consultant or technician visiting a UAE branch for a short assignment that does not need a work permit.
- Exploring investment, a free zone or a mainland setup before committing.
It is different from a tourist visa mainly in purpose and in who may be asked to support it. A tourist visa is for leisure. A business visit supports commercial activity, so the authority may ask for proof of that purpose, such as an invitation letter, an exhibition registration or proof of investment.
The two main routes
Direct answer: route 1 is the visitor applying to explore business opportunities. Route 2 is a company or resident sponsoring the visit.
Route 1: Visit visa to explore business opportunities (GDRFA Dubai)
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) lists a service called the visit visa for the purpose of researching and exploring business opportunities, for single or multiple entries.
According to the GDRFA service page:
- Requirements: a colour personal photo, a copy of the passport valid for at least 6 months, and proof of investment.
- Validity options: 60, 90 or 120 days.
- Fees listed: AED 200 for 60 days, AED 300 for 90 days and AED 400 for 120 days, plus 5% VAT. A security deposit of AED 1,000 is listed, and additional processing fees apply.
- How to apply: digitally through the GDRFA smart services system with UAE Pass or username, or in person at a Customer Happiness Center or an Amer service center.
- Processing time: 48 hours according to the page.
This route fits an investor or business owner who wants to look at opportunities in Dubai. The page asks for proof of investment, so a visitor with no investment plan or documents may not fit this category.
Route 2: Entry permit sponsored by a company or resident
The ICP service named “Issuance of a Visa” describes an entry permit issued for a specific period, for tourism, visit or treatment, or to complete the procedures for a work residence or family residence.
The ICP page lists seven categories of applicant, including visitors, tourism establishments, healthcare facilities, government and private entities for work missions, licensed educational institutions, property owners and retirees. For a business visit, the relevant case is usually a licensed UAE company applying for a visitor, through its own file, or a resident host applying for a guest.
Key points from the ICP page:
- The passport must be valid for no less than 6 months.
- An entry permit must be used within 60 days of issuance.
- Visit visas allow stays of 30, 60 or 90 days. Extension is possible as long as the total stay does not exceed 120 days.
- Fees listed include a 100 AED application fee, 100 AED for a visit visa issuance (200 AED for multiple entry), a 100 AED smart service fee and a financial guarantee in the range of AED 1,000 to 2,000 depending on entry type.
Requirements depend on the case. Fees and limits can be different on the Dubai (GDRFA) and ICP systems, and some categories carry their own conditions. Use the portal that matches the emirate of your sponsor: Dubai-issued permits go through GDRFA, other emirates through ICP.
Who can sponsor a business visitor?
Direct answer: a licensed UAE company in good standing, or a UAE resident with an active sponsor file. The company must be an active, trading establishment.
For a company sponsor:
- The company needs a valid trade licence and an active establishment file with the immigration authority.
- The activity on the licence should make sense for the visit. A visit for a purpose unrelated to the company’s business invites questions.
- The company is responsible for the visitor on paper. If the visitor overstays, the file holder can face consequences, so sponsors should track entry and exit.
- A company that is dormant or not carrying out its activity can face problems with its file. The ICP listing also shows a penalty for unauthorized issuance of business visas, so do not use a licence as a “visa factory” for people who have no real business with the company.
For a resident sponsor:
- The resident needs an active residence and sponsor file that allows visit services. Guest visits for family and friends follow different conditions. See our guide to the visit visa for relatives.
Business visit visa vs tourist visa
| Point | Business visit | Tourist visa |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Meetings, trade, exploring business | Leisure and sightseeing |

What a business visitor can and cannot do
Direct answer: the visitor can attend meetings, view facilities and negotiate or sign agreements, but cannot work for a UAE employer or be paid for local work.
Usually acceptable:
- Meetings and negotiations.
- Attending a trade show as a visitor or buyer.
- Inspecting goods, factories or sites.
- Attending training or briefings with no local employment.
Not acceptable:
- Taking up a job, even short term, without a work permit and the right visa.
- Running a UAE business on a visit visa, such as serving customers day to day.
- Receiving local pay for work in the UAE.
The penalty for working on the wrong visa can include fines and deportation. Read working on a UAE tourist visa for the details. If the visit turns into a job offer, the correct path is a change of status inside the country or a new employment visa. See changing status from visit to employment visa.
Documents checklist
Direct answer: passport, photo and a purpose document. The sponsor adds its own company documents.
For the visitor:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months.
- Recent colour photo with white background.
- Proof of purpose, such as an invitation letter, conference registration or investment proof.
- Return ticket or onward travel, if the authority or airline asks.
For a company sponsor:
- Valid trade licence and establishment card.
- Company file access on the correct portal.
- Invitation letter on company letterhead explaining the purpose and dates.
- Proof the company is active, such as a lease and recent activity.
- Payment of the fees and any refundable deposit shown on the service page.
For the explore-opportunities route:
- Proof of investment as required by the GDRFA page.
Keep copies of every approval. The airline may ask to see the entry permit before boarding.
Step by step: how to apply
- Choose the route. Visitor applying alone to explore business opportunities, or a sponsor applying for the visitor.
- Pick the right authority. Dubai permits through GDRFA. Other emirates through ICP. Our guide to ICP vs GDRFA explains the difference.
- Prepare documents. Use the checklist above.
- Apply online or in person. Use the smart services system with UAE Pass or username, or a service centre.
- Pay the listed fees and any deposit.
- Receive the entry permit. Send it to the visitor and check the validity and entry type before travel.
- Enter within the permit window. ICP states an entry permit must be used within 60 days of issuance.
- Track the stay. Note the exact last legal day and plan the exit or an extension before it.
If you want a faster turnaround for a normal visit, see the guide to the 48 hour fast-track tourist visa.
Validity, extension and exit
Direct answer: the stay depends on the visa type chosen. ICP lists stays of 30, 60 or 90 days with total stays up to 120 days after extension, and GDRFA lists 60, 90 and 120 day business exploration visas.
- Check the validity printed on the permit, not the validity you expected when you applied.
- Extensions are made through the same authority that issued the permit and may carry extra fees. See tourist visa extension for how extensions work in practice.
- Rules were updated in 2026, so read the latest summary in UAE visit visa new rules 2026.
- If the visitor will leave and re-enter, make sure the visa allows multiple entries.
Overstay and penalties
Direct answer: the ICP service page lists a fine of AED 50 per day for expiry of the permitted stay.
The ICP “Issuance of a Visa” page lists AED 50 per day for expiry of the permitted stay period. Fines must be cleared before departure and may affect later applications. Because the rules and any amnesty or relief change often, read our current article on UAE overstay fines and the note on grace period and renewal fines before you rely on a number.
For sponsors, the practical risk is bigger than the fine. A company that sponsors visitors who overstay can have trouble with later applications on its file.
Common mistakes
- Applying under the wrong visa type, such as tourist, for a visit that includes paid work.
- Passport with less than 6 months validity.
- Not entering within 60 days of issuance.
- A sponsor company with an inactive file or an unrelated activity.
- Missing proof of purpose or investment.
- Not tracking the last legal day of stay.
- Assuming a business visit lets the person start work.
- Using unofficial agents who promise visas without a real sponsor.
Planning a longer-term presence?
If the visitor plans to set up a company, hire staff or live in the UAE, a visit visa is only the first step. A company licence, an investor or employment visa and Emirates ID come next. Frequently asked questions
Is there an official “business visit visa” in the UAE?
Dubai’s GDRFA lists a visit visa for exploring business opportunities. Business visitors can also enter on an entry permit sponsored by a company or resident. The name varies by system, so check the exact service name on the portal.
Do I need a sponsor for a business exploration visa in Dubai?
The GDRFA service page for exploring business opportunities lists a photo, passport copy and proof of investment, not a sponsor. Check the live page, as requirements may be updated.
How long can a business visitor stay?
GDRFA lists 60, 90 and 120 day options for the business exploration visa. ICP lists stays of 30, 60 or 90 days for visit visas, with extensions up to a total of 120 days. The permit you receive is the one that counts.
What is the passport validity requirement?
Both services list a passport valid for at least 6 months.
How much does it cost?
GDRFA lists AED 200, 300 and 400 for 60, 90 and 120 days, plus 5% VAT, a AED 1,000 deposit and processing fees. ICP lists its own application, issuance and guarantee amounts. Check the current page before paying.
How fast is approval?
GDRFA lists 48 hours for the business exploration visa. Other routes depend on the authority and the documents.
Can a business visitor work in the UAE?
No. A visit visa does not allow employment. Working without the right permit can lead to fines and deportation.
Can a company sponsor a foreign partner?
A licensed, active UAE company can apply for a visitor through its file where the service allows. The company must have a genuine reason for the visit.
What happens if the visitor overstays?
ICP lists AED 50 per day for expiry of the permitted stay. Fines should be cleared before leaving, and a sponsor can face file problems.
Can a business visit turn into a work visa?
Only through the official change of status or a new employment visa. See the guide on changing from visit to employment visa.
