Renewing Your Passport in the UAE 2026: How to Update Your Residence and Emirates ID Records with ICP and GDRFA

Got a new passport? Your UAE residence record still shows the old number. Learn the correct order, documents, ICP and GDRFA routes, and which accounts to update next.

Renewing a passport is simple at your embassy. The surprise comes afterwards: your UAE residence record, Emirates ID, bank and tenancy still show the old passport number. That mismatch is behind many rejected visa renewals, bank holds and delayed tenancy renewals. This guide explains the order of steps and the two official routes.

Quick Answer

After your embassy issues a new passport, you must update the passport details on your UAE residence record. If your residence was issued in Dubai, use the GDRFA Dubai service “Amendment of all types of residence permit data”, online or at an Amer centre. If it was issued in another emirate, use the ICP Smart Services residency data amendment. A change to residence data can also lead to a new Emirates ID, so check the service page. Then update your bank, employer, insurer and tenancy records.

When Do You Need to Update?

Update the residence record when:

  • you receive a new passport with a new passport number;
  • your passport was renewed and the expiry date changed;
  • your passport details changed because of a name or other correction (a separate amendment may apply).

You do not need this service just because your passport is close to expiry. You need it once the new passport exists.

The Right Order

  1. Renew the passport first. Apply at your embassy or consulate in the UAE, or through your home country’s process.
  2. Check the new passport. Make sure the name, date of birth and number are correct and that the passport has enough validity left.
  3. Update the residence record. Use GDRFA (Dubai visas) or ICP (other emirates and federal services).
  4. Collect the updated records. Check your digital visa status and Emirates ID details.
  5. Update everything linked to the old number. Bank, employer, insurer, landlord and utility accounts.

Do not wait for your visa renewal date to do step 3. A renewal application with an old passport number is a common reason for delays.

Which Authority: ICP or GDRFA?

Where your residence was issued Authority Usual route
Dubai GDRFA Dubai gdrfad.gov.ae, GDRFA app, or an Amer centre
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and other emirates ICP ICP Smart Services website or UAEICP app with UAE PASS

If you are not sure, check your visa status first. Our guide to UAE visa status check online shows how. For the difference between the two authorities and typing centres, see ICP vs GDRFA and typing centres in Dubai.

Documents You Usually Need

The exact list is on the service page, but expect these:

  • your new passport (original and a clear copy);
  • your old passport copy, if the service page or Amer centre asks for it;
  • your Emirates ID;
  • a recent personal photo with a white background;
  • your current residence visa copy or digital visa details.

GDRFA Dubai’s official service page lists a recent photo with a white background and the passport of the sponsored person. Typing centres and Amer centres may ask for more documents. Ask before you travel to the centre.

Doing It at GDRFA Dubai

  1. Log in to the GDRFA website or app, or go to an Amer centre.
  2. Select the service “Amendment of all types of residence permit data”.
  3. Enter the new passport details and attach the documents.
  4. Pay the fee shown on the service page.
  5. Wait for the request to be approved and follow the status.

Fees and processing times are published on the official service page and change. Check them there. Do not rely on a figure from a blog or a centre advert.

Doing It Through ICP

  1. Open the ICP Smart Services website or the UAEICP app and sign in with UAE PASS.
  2. Choose the residency services section and the residence data amendment service.
  3. Fill in the new passport details and upload the documents.
  4. Pay the fee on the service page and track the request.

The ICP “update personal information” option is mainly for contact details such as phone number and address. It is not the service for a new passport number. Our Emirates ID information update guide explains what that service does cover.

Do You Get a New Visa or Emirates ID?

Residence data changes can trigger a new Emirates ID, because the ID is linked to your residence record. The service page shows whether a new card is issued and what it costs. Today most residence visas are digital, linked to your Emirates ID and passport number, so confirm what proof you receive after the update. If your Emirates ID is also near expiry, read Emirates ID renewal in the UAE so you can plan both together.

Passport Validity and Visa Renewal

Many guides say your passport must have at least six months of validity left to renew a residence visa. The rule is applied by the authority, and cases differ. If your passport has less than six months left, renew it before you apply to renew your visa, or ask ICP or GDRFA what they will accept. See UAE residence visa renewal for the renewal steps.

Who to Update After the Residence Record

Who Why it matters
Employer / HR Labour contract and MOHRE records use your passport details
Bank Old passport numbers can block transfers and card renewals
Insurance company Health insurance is tied to your ID and passport
Landlord / Ejari or Tawtheeq Tenancy renewal checks match your documents
Telecom and utility providers Account verification and bill changes
Airlines and loyalty programmes Tickets must match the passport you travel with

If Your Old Passport Is Lost

If the old passport was lost or stolen, you must follow the lost passport process first: a police report, the embassy replacement, and any exit permit needed. The step-by-step process is in our guide on lost or stolen passport in the UAE. After you hold the new passport, update the residence record as described above, and attach the police report if the service asks for it.

Special Cases

Children and dependants. Each family member has their own residence record, so each new passport needs its own update. A sponsor can usually submit the request for dependants. Renew all passports around the same time to save separate trips.

Domestic workers. The sponsor is responsible for updating the worker’s record. Do not leave it to the worker, because the sponsor account is the one the authority checks.

Golden Visa and long-term residence holders. A longer visa does not remove the duty to update the passport number. The record still needs to show your current passport.

Name changes. If your name changed on the new passport (for example after marriage), the update is a data correction as well. Bring the supporting document, such as the marriage certificate, and check whether it must be attested. Our team can check the attestation steps for your country.

Passport renewed outside the UAE. If you renewed while on a trip home, do not assume the airport will update anything. Complete the amendment after you return, and keep the old passport copy until it is done.

Employees on a company visa. Tell HR as soon as you receive the new passport. The company PRO may submit the request on your behalf, and the labour contract details should be corrected at the same time.

A Simple Timeline

When What to do
6 to 9 months before passport expiry Book the embassy renewal appointment
The week the new passport arrives Check the details and make clear copies
Within days Submit the residence data amendment
After approval Confirm visa status and Emirates ID details
Within the next two weeks Update bank, employer, insurer and landlord
Before any trip Check the airline booking matches the passport you will carry

The law gives residents a limited period to report a change in their passport details, and sources mention one month. Check the current period with GDRFA or ICP, because late reporting can lead to fines.

What a Rejected Request Usually Means

A request is most often sent back for one of four reasons: a blurred or cropped passport scan, a photo that does not meet the white background rule, a mismatch between the name on the old and new passports, or the wrong service selected. Read the rejection message, correct the exact item, and resubmit. If you apply through a typing centre, ask them to show you the rejection reason rather than only telling you the request failed.

Keeping Proof of the Update

Once the amendment is approved, save the approval message, the updated visa or residence details and the receipt in one folder on your phone and in cloud storage. Banks, HR teams and landlords often ask for proof that the new passport is linked to your residence, and the approval is the fastest answer. If a bank still shows the old number after you send proof, ask for the request to be escalated with the reference number instead of repeating the same documents. Keep the old passport copy as well, because some institutions want to see the link between the old and new numbers before they change their own records.

Common Mistakes

  • Waiting until visa renewal day to update the passport number.
  • Using the wrong service (contact details update instead of residence data amendment).
  • Trying to use ICP for a Dubai-issued visa, or GDRFA for a visa issued elsewhere.
  • Travelling on the new passport before the record is updated, which can cause problems at the airport.
  • Forgetting to update the bank and employer.
  • Using a copy with a poor photo, which delays approval.
  • Relying on old fee figures from a blog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to update my UAE residence when I renew my passport?
Yes. Your residence record is linked to your passport details, so the new passport number needs to be recorded.

Where do I update it if my visa was issued in Dubai?
Through GDRFA Dubai, online or at an Amer centre, using the amendment of residence permit data service.

Where do I update it if my visa was issued in another emirate?
Through ICP Smart Services using the residence data amendment service.

How long does it take?
It varies. Check the processing time on the official service page, and do not rely on third-party estimates.

What does it cost?
Fees are published on the official GDRFA or ICP service page and can change. Verify there before paying.

Will I get a new Emirates ID?
A residence data change can lead to a new card. The service page shows whether it applies in your case.

Do I need my old passport?
Often a copy is requested. If the old passport is lost, you will need the police report instead.

How much validity should my new passport have?
Most guides say at least six months for visa renewal. Confirm with ICP or GDRFA for your case.

Can I travel before the update is done?
It is risky. Complete the update first, or confirm the situation with the authority before you travel.

Do I need to tell my bank and employer?
Yes. They keep your passport number on file and may ask for the new one at the next renewal or transfer.

Is the old visa still valid after the passport changes?
The residence stays valid, but the record must show your current passport. An outdated record causes problems at renewal.

Can a typing centre do this for me?
Yes, typing centres and Amer centres can submit it. Ask for a receipt and the status reference.
