Many people in the UAE find that the profession on their residence visa does not match their offer letter or their real job. The visa may say “sales executive” when you work as an accountant, or a promotion may have changed your role while the paperwork stayed the same. Fixing it is possible, but it is a two-step process with two different authorities, and the order matters. This guide explains both steps using the official service pages, and it says plainly where those pages do not give an answer.

Quick Answer: How to Change the Profession on a UAE Residence Visa

Who applies first? Your employer. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) service “Modification of Work Permits / Employment Contracts” is submitted by the establishment’s authorised signatory, not by the employee.

What are the two steps? Step 1 is MOHRE: modify the work permit and employment contract. Step 2 is the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP): amend the residency permit data and update the Emirates ID.

What do they cost? MOHRE lists a federal fee of AED 50, plus a business centre commission capped at AED 72 if you use a centre. ICP lists AED 150 for replacing the Emirates ID card to update the displayed information and AED 100 for smart services fees.

How long do they take? MOHRE lists 2 working days. ICP lists 2 days.

Do I need UAE Pass? Yes. Both service pages say the login is through UAE Pass.

Why a Profession Mismatch Matters

Your profession is recorded in more than one place: the employment contract and work permit at MOHRE, the residency permit data at ICP, and the Emirates ID, whose displayed information ICP updates through the same service. When these records say different things, every later process has to deal with the difference. Think of a visa renewal, a new bank account, a family sponsorship application, a salary certificate or a move to a new employer.

The official pages do not list a penalty for a mismatch, and we do not claim one. The practical reason to fix it is to keep your records consistent, and to avoid surprises when an authority, bank or embassy compares your documents.

A note for employers

Employers who give staff accommodation, transport or phones also have tax records to keep. From 1 October 2026, the VAT treatment of those staff benefits depends on written policies and contracts. Qaspro Global explains the employer side in its guide to FTA Decision No. 17 of 2026 on input VAT for employee expenses.

Step 1: Modify the Work Permit and Employment Contract With MOHRE

Direct answer: The employer submits a modification request on MOHRE’s systems, attaching a new Ministry-approved employment contract that shows the new job, signed by both employer and employee.

Who can apply

The MOHRE page states that the request must be submitted by the establishment’s authorised signatory. The target audience is listed as employers. An employee cannot start this step alone.

Conditions the employer must meet

  • If the occupation changes, the new occupation must be consistent with the establishment’s activity.
  • An employee in a specialised profession, or any profession that requires a licence, must meet the requirements in the applicable legislation.
  • The establishment must hold a valid licence with no registered violations that would lead to suspension of its operations.

The first condition catches many requests. If the company’s licence covers trading, you may not be able to be re-titled as a software engineer. The new job must fit what the company is licensed to do.

Documents

  1. An employment contract approved by the Ministry, signed by the employer and the employee.
  2. An academic certificate bearing the employee’s name, based on skill level (see the table below).
  3. A professional licence from the competent authority where one is required. The page gives examples such as doctors and nurses, teachers, fitness trainers and advocates.

Steps on the MOHRE service

  1. Log in with UAE Pass through an approved channel.
  2. Enter the updated contract or job details, review the information retrieved automatically and attach the documents.
  3. Pay the required fees after reviewing the request.
  4. Receive the issued modification to the work permit and labour contract. MOHRE will notify the establishment if more is needed.

Fees and time

The MOHRE page lists a federal fee of AED 50 and a business centre commission capped at AED 72. Apart from the federal charges, the service is free through the MOHRE website and smart app. The page notes that the fees shown do not include tax and collection charges. The expected time is 2 working days.

Tracking the request

MOHRE says you can follow an application through inquiry.mohre.gov.ae, the MOHRE smart app, the chatbot or the call centre on 600 590000, which is listed as available 24 hours a day.

Step 2: Update the Residency Data and Emirates ID With ICP

Direct answer: After the MOHRE change, apply on the ICP Smart Services website or app for the “Amendment of Residency Permit Data” service. ICP lists the work card as a document when you are changing profession.

What the ICP page says

  • Service: a service through which residence permit data is modified.
  • Who it is for: the page lists residents, foreign students at accredited UAE educational institutions, and employees of government, private or free zone entities.
  • Channels: the ICP Smart Services website and the ICP app, available around the clock. Customer Happiness Centres follow working hours.
  • Login: UAE Pass.
  • Time: 2 days.

Documents

The page lists the passport, a personal photo and a “work card (in case of changing profession)”. It also lists a message from government agencies for the government sector. The page does not make clear which documents apply to which applicant category, so confirm the list on the portal when you start the application. Our guide to the UAE labour card download shows how to get the work card.

Fees

ICP lists two items, quoted as they appear on the page:

  • Fee for replacing the Emirates ID card to update the displayed information: AED 150.
  • Smart services fees: AED 100.

The page does not say how the two fees combine for a particular request, so we do not add them together. The application screen shows the amount due before you pay.

Steps

  1. Submit the application on the ICP website or app.
  2. Review the data that was retrieved automatically and correct it if needed.
  3. Attach documents if the automatic data retrieval fails.
  4. Pay the fees.
  5. Receive an approval or rejection notification.

An important condition

The page states that the application will be cancelled if the procedures are not completed, or if the required amendments to returned applications are not made within the specified period. Watch for any request to correct your application and answer it quickly.

For other updates handled in the same way, such as address or marital status, read our guide on updating Emirates ID information on ICP. If your card is lost or damaged rather than out of date, use the Emirates ID replacement guide.

If Your Residence File Is With GDRFA Dubai

Residence permit data for visas handled through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) has its own official service, “Amendment of all types of residence permit data”. Its page lists:

  • Documents: a recent personal photo on a white background and the passport, valid for more than six months. Investors and partners must present their establishment card.
  • Profession change: for a government-sector sponsor, a letter of change of profession. For a private-sector sponsor, a labour contract or Employment ID.
  • Fees: an urgent service fee of AED 100 and an innovation fee of AED 10. A printing fee of AED 100 applies when you submit through a Zajel courier centre.
  • Channels: the GDRFA website, available all day, or AMER centres during their operating hours. After an SMS approval at an AMER centre, you visit a GDRFA branch to stamp the visa.
  • Missing documents: you have 30 days to attach them, or the application is cancelled.
  • Time: the page does not state an expected completion time.

If you are not sure whether ICP or GDRFA handles your file, read our comparison of ICP and GDRFA services before you apply.

The Right Order: Why the Contract Comes First

The logical order is MOHRE first, then ICP or GDRFA. The reason comes from the documents. The employer-side change creates the updated employment contract and work permit. ICP then asks for the work card when the profession changes, so the work card has to show the new job before the residency data can match it.

If you apply to ICP first, you may not yet hold a work card that shows the new job, and that is the document ICP lists. Follow the sequence:

  1. Agree the new job title with your employer and confirm it is consistent with the company’s licensed activity.
  2. Employer signs and submits the MOHRE modification with the new contract.
  3. Confirm the updated work permit or work card.
  4. Apply for the residency data amendment and Emirates ID update.
  5. Check that the new records show the same profession.

Our guide to UAE work permit categories explains the permit types, and the guide to employment contract types explains the contract terms that go with them.

Qualification and Licence Traps by Skill Level

MOHRE ties the certificate requirement to the skill level of the job. This is where many requests are rejected, so check it before your employer applies.

Skill level Academic certificate listed by MOHRE
Levels 1 and 2 Bachelor’s degree or higher
Levels 3 and 4 Diploma or higher
Level 5 High school certificate
Levels 6 to 9 No certificate required

The page also notes that workers who earn less than AED 4,000 per month, or who do not hold a degree, are not considered skilled.

Three traps follow from this:

  • Moving into a higher skill level. If the new job sits in a level that needs a degree or diploma you do not hold, the request can fail. Ask MOHRE or the service centre which level your new job falls under before you apply.
  • Moving into a licensed profession. Doctors and nurses, teachers, fitness trainers and advocates need a professional licence from the competent authority. The page names examples including the Ministry of Health, education authorities, the Youth and Sports Authority and the Ministry of Justice.
  • A job that does not match the company’s activity. The new occupation must be consistent with the establishment’s activity.

The MOHRE page asks for a clear certificate bearing the employee’s name, so check that the name on your certificate matches your passport before the employer applies.

What If Your Employer Will Not Amend the Profession?

The MOHRE service is built around the employer’s authorised signatory, and the page gives employees no way to submit it themselves. The practical options are therefore these:

  1. Ask in writing. Send a short email to HR or the owner, stating the correct job title, the date your role changed and the reason you need the records updated.
  2. Ask for a copy of your current contract. Check what the Ministry-approved contract currently says.
  3. Check the status of your work permit. Use the channels in our guide to checking UAE visa status online.
  4. Use MOHRE’s complaint route if needed. If the issue is part of a wider dispute with your employer, read our MOHRE complaint registration guide. MOHRE’s call centre number is 600 590000.

We cannot say from the official pages that an employee has a right to force an amendment. If this is a legal dispute, take advice from a qualified UAE lawyer.

Free Zone Employees

If you work for a free zone company, the work permit is usually managed through the free zone authority, so the first step may not be a MOHRE application. The process differs by zone, and we found official guidance for only some of them. Treat this section as general guidance, and check with your free zone authority.

  • JAFZA has an official guide for amending the designation on an employment contract. The request is made on the Dubai Trade portal under Employee Services, Employment Contract (EC), then “Amend EC – Approval”. The guide lists the amendment form, an attested educational certificate, photographs and a copy of the residence visa among the documents, a fee of AED 1,240 and 3 working days. An amended card is issued with the new designation.
  • RAKEZ has a Visa Amendment e-service for a job title change. It lists a passport valid for at least six months, a recent photo and a signed experience or promotion letter stating the new job title and salary. After the visa amendment is approved, an employment contract amendment can be submitted through the RAKEZ portal.
  • Other zones such as DMCC, DAFZA and IFZA: we did not find an official page on job title amendments. Ask the authority’s visa team.

Notice that the order is not the same in every zone. RAKEZ lists the visa amendment first and the contract amendment after approval, while JAFZA treats the employment contract designation as its own request. Follow the sequence your free zone gives you.

Documents Checklist

Prepare these before your employer starts the MOHRE request:

  • Passport. The GDRFA and RAKEZ pages ask for more than six months of validity, so renew early if yours is close to expiry.
  • Recent personal photo on a white background.
  • Current work permit or work card.
  • The new Ministry-approved employment contract, signed by both sides.
  • Academic certificate in your name, if your skill level needs one.
  • Professional licence, if the new job is a licensed profession.
  • UAE Pass account for you and for the employer’s authorised signatory. Our UAE Pass registration guide shows the setup.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting with ICP. The work card is required when changing profession, so do the employer-side change first.
  • Choosing a job title the company licence does not cover. The new occupation must be consistent with the establishment’s activity.
  • Ignoring the licence. Licensed professions need the licence from the competent authority.
  • Adding up fees from different pages. ICP does not say how its two fees combine, and MOHRE and GDRFA are separate services. Use the amount shown on the application screen.
  • Not answering a return request. The ICP application is cancelled if required amendments are not made in time.
  • Relying on a rule you cannot find on an official page. Typing centres sometimes mention extra requirements such as a minimum time in the role. Neither the MOHRE nor the ICP service page lists one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply to change the profession on a UAE work permit?

The establishment’s authorised signatory. The MOHRE service page states that the application must be submitted by the authorised signatory, and its target audience is employers.

Can I change the profession on my visa myself?

Not through the MOHRE modification service, which is an employer service. You apply yourself for the second step, the ICP residency data amendment, once the work permit change is done.

How much does it cost to change a profession on a UAE visa?

The official figures are: MOHRE federal fee AED 50 plus a business centre commission capped at AED 72, free through the MOHRE website and app apart from federal charges; ICP AED 150 for replacing the Emirates ID card to update the displayed information and AED 100 for smart services fees, with no combined total stated. If your file is with GDRFA Dubai, its page lists an urgent service fee of AED 100 and an innovation fee of AED 10. The MOHRE fees exclude tax and collection charges.

How long does it take?

MOHRE lists 2 working days and ICP lists 2 days. Your total time depends on how quickly the employer prepares the new contract and documents, and whether any application is returned for correction.

Which comes first, MOHRE or ICP?

MOHRE first. The employer-side contract and work permit change comes first, and ICP then lists the work card as a document when the profession changes.

Is there a minimum time I must stay in a role before the profession can change?

Neither the MOHRE service page nor the ICP service page lists a minimum time in the role. If someone tells you there is one, ask them to show you the official source.

Can the new profession be anything I want?

No. The new occupation must be consistent with the establishment’s activity, and an employee in a licensed or specialised profession must meet the requirements in the applicable legislation.

Do I need a degree to change my job title?

It depends on the skill level of the new job. MOHRE lists a bachelor’s degree or higher for levels 1 and 2, a diploma or higher for levels 3 and 4, a high school certificate for level 5 and no certificate for levels 6 to 9.

Do I need UAE Pass?

Yes. The MOHRE steps start with a UAE Pass login, and the ICP page states that the service requires a UAE Pass login.

Will I get a new Emirates ID card?

ICP lists a fee for replacing the Emirates ID card to update the displayed information. Confirm with ICP during your application whether your case needs a new card.

What if I work in a free zone?

The request normally goes through your free zone authority, and the steps differ by zone. JAFZA and RAKEZ publish official guidance, described above. For other zones, ask the authority directly.

If your new profession comes with a job change or a fresh probation period and you plan to borrow, this guide covers what UAE banks require for a mortgage during probation or after a job change.

Can I track the MOHRE request?

Yes. MOHRE lists inquiry.mohre.gov.ae, the MOHRE smart app, its chatbot and the call centre on 600 590000 for status enquiries.
