UAE transit visa 2026: 48 or 96 hours, single entry, no extension, sponsored by UAE airlines. See who needs one, documents and the official AED 50 fee.

Published: 15 October 2026

You have a long layover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and you want to leave the airport for a few hours, or a night. Whether you can do that depends on your passport. Some travellers walk out with visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. Others need a visa that is arranged before they board, and for a short airport stopover that visa is the UAE transit visa.

This guide uses two official sources: the UAE Government portal (u.ae) page on the transit visa, updated on 28 July 2026, and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA) service page “Issuance of a 48/96-hour Transit Visa”. Both were read on 14 October 2026. We also point out where third-party websites claim things the two official pages do not say.

Quick Answer: What Is the UAE Transit Visa?

What is it? A transit visa is issued for either 48 hours or 96 hours. According to u.ae, it is a single-entry visa and it cannot be extended.

Who sponsors it? The UAE-based airline you are flying with. u.ae says transit visas are sponsored by UAE-based airlines and must be processed and approved before you enter the UAE.

Who needs one? A traveller who is not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE, and who intends to step out of the airport. A passenger who stays inside the airport does not need one.

Where do I apply? Through the UAE-based airline you are travelling on, a travel agency, or an airport hotel (u.ae). The GDRFA page says applications should be submitted through approved airlines and lists mediator websites such as Emirates Airlines, flydubai, dnata and airport hotels.

What does it cost? The GDRFA page states the fee as “AED 50, plus fees for the mediator service (Airlines)”. The total depends on the airline or agent you use, so check the final amount at checkout.

How long does it take? The GDRFA page gives an expected completion time of 48 hours, and says the service is available 24/7.

What a UAE Transit Visa Actually Is

A transit visa is a short permission to enter the UAE as a visitor while you are passing through on the way to another country. The GDRFA page describes the service as one that “enables the issuance of a transit visa, allowing a foreign national transiting through the country’s airports to enter the country as a visitor and remain for a period not exceeding 48/96 hours”.

Three things follow from that wording and from the u.ae page:

  1. It is a short stay, not a holiday visa. The limit is 48 or 96 hours, set when the visa is issued.
  2. It is for people connecting through UAE airports. The reason for the visa is onward travel, which is why the GDRFA document list asks for a flight ticket confirming onward travel.
  3. It is single entry. You enter once. If you leave the country and want to come back, you need a new permission.

Who Needs a Transit Visa and Who Does Not

The u.ae page puts the test in one sentence: if you are not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE, and you intend to step out of the airport, you need a pre-arranged transit visa.

That gives you these situations:

Your situation Do you need a transit visa?
You are eligible for visa-free entry to the UAE No. You can enter under your visa-free rights.
You are eligible for a visa on arrival No. See our guide to the UAE visa on arrival to check your nationality and conditions.
You are not eligible for either and you want to leave the airport during the layover Yes. Arrange a transit visa before you travel.
You will stay inside the airport throughout the connection The u.ae page ties the transit visa to travellers who intend to step out of the airport.

Eligibility for visa-free entry and visa on arrival depends on nationality and, in some cases, on the residence permit you hold. We do not list those countries here because they change. The u.ae page and our visa on arrival guide are the places to check.

48-Hour Visa vs 96-Hour Visa

The u.ae page says the UAE issues two types: one for 48 hours and another for 96 hours. A transit visa is “issued for either 48 or 96 hours”.

Pick the validity that fits your itinerary:

  • 48 hours suits a single overnight or a long daytime layover.
  • 96 hours suits a longer gap between flights.

Because the visa is single entry and cannot be extended, choose the validity with a margin. If your onward flight is delayed beyond the visa period, you cannot stretch the visa. For a stay that is genuinely longer, look at a visit visa instead, covered in our UAE visit visa rules guide.

How Airline Sponsorship Works

A transit visa does not come from a visa centre in the same way a residence visa does. u.ae says that transit visas are sponsored by UAE-based airlines. In practice that means the airline acts as the sponsor for your short stay, and the application is processed through that airline, a travel agency or an airport hotel.

The GDRFA page uses the term “mediator” for these channels and lists “Emirates Airlines, Flydubai, Dnata, Airport hotel” as examples of mediator websites. The page lists the channel as the mediator’s own website, so there is no separate government form for the traveller.

Two practical points:

  • Use one of the channels the official pages list. u.ae names the UAE-based airline you are travelling on, a travel agency, or an airport hotel. The GDRFA page names approved airlines and airport hotels as mediators.
  • We do not describe airline-specific procedures here. The u.ae page links to the transit visa services of Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline. Each airline sets its own booking screen and conditions, so read that airline’s own page before you pay.

Required Documents

The GDRFA service page lists three requirements:

Document What the page says
Photograph A recent colour passport-sized photograph with a white background
Passport A copy of the passport or travel document, including the cover, valid for at least six months
Flight ticket A flight ticket confirming onward travel

Check the details before you submit:

  • Passport validity. The GDRFA page asks for at least six months of validity.
  • The cover. The GDRFA page says the passport copy must include the cover.
  • Onward ticket. The GDRFA page asks for a flight ticket confirming onward travel.

The GDRFA page lists no other requirements, and its terms and conditions field reads “Not applicable”. Your airline or agent runs its own booking form, so read it before you pay.

Official Fee and What You Actually Pay

The GDRFA page words the fee as: “AED 50, plus fees for the mediator service (Airlines)”.

So the government fee is AED 50, and the airline or agent adds its own service fee on top. The mediator’s fee is not set by GDRFA, which means the total can differ between airlines, agents and airport hotels.

You may see other totals on commercial blogs and news sites. Published totals for the same visa differ widely between sources. We do not repeat them, because neither the u.ae page nor the GDRFA page states a total. The safe approach:

  1. Note the AED 50 official fee.
  2. Open your airline, agent or hotel checkout page.
  3. Read the final amount before you pay, including the mediator service line.

Processing Time

The GDRFA page gives an expected completion time of 48 hours, and says the service is available 24/7. The u.ae page says the transit visa must be processed and approved before you enter the UAE.

Treat that as a planning rule: apply well before your flight, and do not leave the application for the day you travel. If approval has not arrived by the time you board, do not assume you can sort it out at the border.

Step-by-Step: How to Get a Transit Visa

  1. Check your entry rights. Confirm whether your nationality is visa-free or eligible for a visa on arrival. If so, you do not need a transit visa.
  2. Decide if you will leave the airport. The transit visa matters only if you intend to step out.
  3. Choose 48 or 96 hours to fit your connection, with a margin.
  4. Choose a channel. Your UAE-based airline, a travel agency, or an airport hotel (u.ae).
  5. Prepare your documents: passport-size colour photo on a white background, a passport copy with the cover valid for at least six months, and a flight ticket confirming onward travel (GDRFA).
  6. Submit and pay. Pay the AED 50 official fee plus the mediator’s service fee, and read the checkout total before you confirm.
  7. Wait for approval. The expected completion time is 48 hours. Do not travel without the approved visa.
  8. Carry the approval on the day, together with your passport and onward ticket.

Transit Visa vs Visit Visa vs Visa on Arrival

Transit visa Visa on arrival Visit visa
Purpose Short stay during a connection Entry for eligible nationalities Tourism, family or business visits
Duration 48 or 96 hours Depends on nationality and conditions Our visit visa guide lists 30, 60 and 90 day options

Arranged Before you enter the UAE At the airport Before you travel
Extension Cannot be extended (u.ae) See our visa on arrival guide Online extensions are covered in our visit visa extension guide

A transit visa is not a lighter version of a tourist visa. It is a different product with a different sponsor. If you want a stay of days or weeks, apply for a visit or tourist visa instead. Our guide to the 48-hour tourist visa fast track in Dubai explains a different product: a tourist visa processed in 48 working hours through an accredited tourism office. It is not a transit visa, even though the 48 appears in both names.

Overstaying and Visa Rules

The u.ae page says the transit visa is single entry and cannot be extended. That means you must leave within the 48 or 96 hours that the visa gives you.

If you stay beyond the permitted period, you fall into overstay rules. Our UAE overstay fines guide reports a standard fine of AED 50 per day. Check with ICP how the rate applies to a transit visa before you rely on it, and plan your return flight so that the question never arises. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving before approval. u.ae says the visa must be processed and approved before you enter the UAE.
  • Applying without a ticket that confirms onward travel. The GDRFA document list requires one, so book your onward flight before you apply.
  • Assuming a transit visa can be extended into a tourist stay. It cannot. It is single entry and cannot be extended.
  • Buying a transit visa when you do not need one. Check visa-free entry and visa on arrival first.
  • Trusting a total price you saw on a blog. The official page gives AED 50 plus the mediator’s fee. The final figure is on the checkout page.
  • Passport validity. The GDRFA page asks for at least six months.
  • Treating the 48-hour tourist visa as a transit visa. They are separate products, as explained above.
