A husband who sponsors his wife, two children and one parent in the UAE dies suddenly, or loses his job and has his own residence visa cancelled within the month. The family does not know one thing: do their visas end the same day, or do they have time? The honest answer is that each person’s visa is tied to the sponsor’s file, so the family has a clock running, but the length of that clock depends on who the person is and which official rule applies.
This guide is for expat families in the UAE who depend on one sponsor. It covers the two situations that start the clock: the sponsor dies, or the sponsor’s own residence is cancelled. We checked the official UAE Government portal (u.ae, page last updated 28 September 2026), the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) grace-period page, and the Dubai GDRFA humanitarian-cases service page. Where the official pages do not give a clear answer for a case, we say so instead of guessing. We also link to our related guides on dependent visa sponsorship, visa cancellation grace periods and what to do after a death in the family, so this page can stay focused on the sponsor-ends scenario.

Quick Answer
- A dependent’s residence visa is tied to the sponsor. The u.ae portal says the expiry date of a dependent’s visa will not exceed the sponsor’s, and a sponsor must cancel the dependents’ visas before cancelling their own.
- After a residence permit is cancelled or expires, ICP lists grace periods of 180, 90, 60 or 30 days depending on category. Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, and widows or divorced women of residents, get 180 days. All other categories get 30 days.
- A widow living in the UAE on her husband’s visa is granted a one-year extension from the date of death, with no substitute sponsor, renewable one time only. The extension also covers children who were on their father’s visa at the time of his death (u.ae).
- Once the grace period ends, the overstay fine is AED 50 per day. Act before the last day, not after it.
- The official pages do not set out one clear rule for a sponsor’s death for sons, daughters over the sponsorship age and parents. These cases need confirmation from ICP or GDRFA before you rely on any number of days.
Why a Dependent Visa Depends on the Sponsor
When you sponsor your wife, children or parents, their residence permits are linked to your own file. Three official facts follow from that:
- The expiry date of a dependent’s visa will not exceed the sponsor’s own visa expiry (u.ae general provisions for the residence visa).
- Before cancelling their own visa, a sponsor must cancel the dependents’ visas.
- If the sponsor’s own residence is cancelled without the dependents being moved, the dependents are left without a valid sponsor and their grace period starts.
This is why the same situation can feel very different in a family. A sponsor who leaves the UAE on purpose can plan the whole move in a set order. A sponsor who dies or whose visa is cancelled suddenly leaves the family to work out the order afterwards, with a clock already running.
Case 1: The Sponsor Dies
What happens to a wife who was on the sponsor’s visa?
The u.ae portal states that when a woman living in the UAE on her husband’s visa is widowed, the UAE Government grants her an extension of one year on her residence visa. The extension starts from the date of death, does not require a substitute sponsor and can be renewed one time only.
The older ICA announcement about the same rule adds the practical requirements that families usually meet: proof of death, proof of a house and proof that the woman can support herself, plus medical fitness for the woman and any child over 18. Fees are quoted in that older announcement as the normal cancellation fees for the previous visas plus a small residence fee. Treat that fee wording as old information and check the current amount on the ICP or GDRFA service page before you go.
What happens to the children?
The same u.ae page says the extension applies to the woman’s children as well, but only if they were on their father’s visa at the time of his death. Two details matter here:
- The visas must have been valid when the sponsor died. If a visa had already expired, you are in a different case and the grace period for an expired permit applies instead.
- A child’s extension runs alongside the mother’s. The older ICA announcement says the children’s visa duration cannot exceed the mother’s.
The six-month humanitarian route in Dubai
The GDRFA Dubai service page “Issuance of a residence permit for humanitarian cases” describes a second route for a widow or divorcee and her children whose sponsor was a resident. Its stated conditions are:
| Condition | What GDRFA states |
|---|---|
| Timing | The permit is issued within six months of the death or divorce |
| Location | The woman must be in the UAE |
| Relationship | The sponsor must have been her husband at the time of the death or divorce |
| Children | If she sponsors her children, she must be their legal custodian |
| Guarantor | She must act as the guarantor |
| Validity | One year |
| Renewal | The case is referred to the competent committee, which reviews it case by case |
For the children, the documents named on that page are a copy of each child’s passport, a medical examination for those aged 18 and above, and a copy of the previous residence permit held under the deceased father. The page lists an expected completion time of 14 days.
Two things to keep straight. First, the u.ae page describes a one-year extension counted from the date of death, while the GDRFA page describes a permit that must be applied for within six months. Reports in the press have described both and sources use different wording. The safe reading is: do not wait for a full year. Start the file inside the first weeks and ask GDRFA or ICP which route applies to your emirate and your family. Second, our separate guide on residence visas for widows and divorced women covers eligibility and documents in more depth.
What about Golden Visa families?
A press summary of the official rules says that if a Golden Residency sponsor dies, sponsored family members may stay for the validity of the permits already granted to them. The u.ae general provisions page does not address this case, so ask ICP to confirm the position for your specific permit before relying on it.
What about parents and adult sons or daughters?
The official pages we read set out the widow and children rule clearly. They do not give a separate, clear rule for parents or for adult sons and daughters when the sponsor dies. Do not assume the widow’s one-year extension covers a parent. For parents and any adult dependent, the practical approach is to treat the permit as expiring at the point the sponsor’s file ends, check the exact grace period for that category with ICP or GDRFA, and begin the new-sponsor or own-visa route immediately. Our guide on parents visa sponsorship explains what a new sponsor needs.
Case 2: The Sponsor Cancels or Loses Their Own Visa
This is the more common case. The sponsor loses a job, resigns, a company closes or the sponsor leaves the UAE for good. When the sponsor’s residence permit is cancelled, the dependents’ permits do not simply carry on.
The ICP grace period table
ICP’s renewal service page lists these grace periods, counted after the residence permit expires or is cancelled:
| Grace period | Who qualifies (as stated by ICP) |
|---|---|
| 180 days | Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members; widows or divorced women of residents; students after completing their studies; foreign passport holders who are relatives of UAE citizens |
| 90 days | Skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 and property owners |
| 60 days | Permits issued with a guarantor or host |
| 30 days | All other categories |
The u.ae portal gives a general statement that UAE residents are granted grace periods of up to six months, according to resident category. The GDRFA humanitarian page lists 60 days as the stay period after expiry or cancellation for that permit type. The table above is the clearest official breakdown, but the category that applies to each family member depends on how that person’s visa was issued. Always check the person’s own visa file, not the sponsor’s.
What this means for a typical family
- A family of a Golden Visa holder is in the most protected group: 180 days for the family members.
- A family sponsored by an ordinary employee falls under “all other categories” in most cases, which means the shortest period, 30 days, unless the file shows a different category.
- Do not assume a number you heard from a friend. The same family can get a different answer if one member holds a different visa type.
Your Options to Keep Everyone Legal
Whichever case applies, the family has the same set of options. Pick one for each person before the grace period ends.
- Move to a new sponsor. A relative or the other spouse can sponsor, if they meet the income and insurance rules in our dependent visa sponsorship guide.
- Move to an employment or investor visa. A spouse or adult child who has a job offer can change status inside the UAE. See our guide to in-country status change from a visit visa to employment. The same logic applies when a dependent moves to a work permit, though the file type differs. A dependent who starts a trading or e-commerce business can also read how Qaspro Global explains AI accounting automation for trading and e-commerce companies.
- Use the widow or humanitarian route. Where the sponsor has died, the widow and children route above is the main official option.
- Leave the UAE before the grace period ends. This is the clean choice if the family plans to return home. Exit before the last day, and keep the cancellation paper and exit stamp.
- Hold the status while you decide. Ask ICP or GDRFA what you can legally do during the grace period, such as submitting a new application, so that you do not lose the right to stay by waiting.
The Fines to Avoid
The u.ae portal states that overstay fees have been standardised at AED 50 per day for visit, tourist and residence visas. ICP’s page says the fine applies from the day after the grace period ends.
AED 50 per day sounds small until you add it up across several family members. A grace period that ends on a Friday and is missed by three weeks costs AED 1,050 for one person, which for a family of four is AED 4,200. Our guide to UAE overstay fines explains how the daily amounts add up and what else follows from an overstay record. A record of overstay can also make a later new application harder, so the cheapest day to act is the first one.
Step by Step: The First 30 Days
If the sponsor has died, start with our guide on what to do after a death in the family for the death certificate, attestation and repatriation steps. Then work through the visa steps below. If the sponsor has cancelled or lost their visa, skip to step 3.
- Collect the death certificate and its attestation from the health authority and the foreign ministry route, as explained in the guide above.
- Write down every dependent’s visa expiry date. Use the visa copy, the Emirates ID or the ICP or GDRFA app. Check each person separately.
- Check the category of each person’s visa. The category decides the grace period (180, 90, 60 or 30 days).
- Decide the route for each person. Widow and children route, new sponsor, own work or investor visa, or exit.
- Gather the documents. Typical items are passports, the previous residence permits, Emirates IDs, the death certificate or cancellation paper, proof of accommodation, medical fitness results where required and health insurance.
- Submit the application through the right channel. Dubai residents use GDRFA, via the smart app, Amer centres or approved typing centres. Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates use ICP.
- Keep every receipt and approval. If anything is queried later, the paper trail is your proof that you acted within the grace period.
- Handle the related cancellations. Mobile, bank, tenancy, school and health insurance each have their own notice rules. Do not leave them for later.
Common Mistakes
- Waiting for the end of the mourning period before touching the visa file.
- Assuming a parent or adult child is covered because the widow is.
- Counting the grace period from the wrong date. The clock starts from expiry or cancellation, or from the date of death in the widow route.
- Assuming a friend’s answer applies because the facts sound alike. Visa category changes the answer.
- Overstaying “by a few days” because the new sponsor’s paperwork is nearly ready.
- Cancelling the sponsor’s visa first when the sponsor is still alive. Dependents’ visas must be cancelled before the sponsor’s own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do dependents’ visas end the day the sponsor dies?
No official page we read says they end on the same day. The widow and her children who were on the father’s visa are granted a one-year extension from the date of death (u.ae). For other dependents, a grace period applies and its length depends on the category. Confirm the exact days with ICP or GDRFA.
How long do I have to leave if the sponsor cancels his visa?
It depends on the category. ICP lists 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members and for widows or divorced women of residents, 90 days for skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 and property owners, 60 days for permits issued with a guarantor or host and 30 days for all other categories.
Does the widow need a new sponsor?
Under the u.ae rule, no. The one-year extension does not require a substitute sponsor. Under the Dubai humanitarian permit, the widow must act as the guarantor and, if she sponsors her children, be their legal custodian.
Can the widow’s extension be renewed?
The u.ae portal says the extension can be renewed one time only. The GDRFA humanitarian permit says renewal is referred to a committee that reviews each case.
What if my child was not on the father’s visa when he died?
The u.ae page says the extension applies to children who were on their father’s visa at the time of his death. A child who was on a different visa is in a different position and needs a separate check.
What happens to my parents’ visas if I die or cancel my visa?
The official pages we read do not give a clear separate rule for parents. Treat the parent’s visa as ending with your file, check the grace period for that visa category and start a new-sponsor application early.
Is the AED 50 daily fine the same for each person?
The portal says the overstay fee is standardised at AED 50 per day for visit, tourist and residence visas. In practice each person who overstays is fined separately, so a family adds up quickly.
Can a dependent change to a work visa during the grace period?
A change of status inside the UAE is possible in many cases, subject to the new sponsor or employer meeting the requirements. Ask ICP or GDRFA what can be submitted during the grace period for your case.
Where do I apply?
Dubai residents apply through GDRFA. Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates apply through ICP, through the smart app or an approved typing centre.
If the family needs another residency route after losing a sponsor, this guide to the Dubai 2-year property investor visa in 2026 explains how a property-linked visa works and where sources disagree on the rules.
What if I cannot find the sponsor’s documents?
Start with the Emirates ID and the visa pages in each person’s passport, then check the status in the ICP or GDRFA app. A typing centre or PRO can retrieve the file details with the right authority.
