Doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers are among the people the UAE most wants to keep, yet the rules for their 10-year Golden Visa are scattered across federal, emirate and employer announcements. Visa websites contradict each other on salary, experience and approvals. This guide separates what the UAE Government’s own pages say from what only commercial sites claim, so you know which route is realistic for your profession.
Quick Answer: Can Healthcare Professionals Get a UAE Golden Visa?
Yes, through one of three routes. There is no single “healthcare professional” Golden Visa category listed on the UAE Government portal. Healthcare workers usually qualify through:
- Exceptional Talent or Rare Specialisations. The UAE Government portal says this category includes doctors. It is a 10-year visa, and each subcategory has its own requirements such as recommendation letters, practical experience or accredited degrees.
- Skilled professional salary route. A monthly salary from AED 30,000, a bachelor’s degree and a valid UAE employment contract, as described in our Golden Visa requirements guide.
- Government recognition or nomination. This includes the Humanitarian Pioneers and Frontline Heroes category (10 years) and employer-linked announcements such as Dubai’s 10-year Golden Visa for nurses with more than 15 years of service at Dubai Health.
Which route fits depends on your profession, your salary, your licence and your employer.
Doctors and Specialists
The route
The UAE Government portal lists doctors under “Exceptional Talent or Rare Specialisations” with a 10-year validity. The portal says each subcategory has specific requirements such as recommendation letters, practical experience or accredited educational degrees. It does not publish a single checklist for doctors.
In practice, commercial and government-facing guides report that a doctor typically needs:
- A valid practising licence in the UAE from the health authority that regulates their emirate.
- An approval or recommendation letter confirming the right to practise. Our requirements guide records this as an approval letter from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) authorising UAE practice. In Abu Dhabi, some sources say an endorsement from the Department of Health (DOH) can serve the same purpose. Confirm which letter your emirate expects before you apply.
- A recognised medical degree and, for specialists, board or specialty certification.
- A valid passport and proof of UAE residence if you are applying from inside the country.
Does a doctor need the AED 30,000 salary?
Not necessarily. Sources that describe the specialised-talent route say there is no minimum salary for it, because eligibility rests on the licence and the approval letter. The salary route is a separate option for people who prefer or need it, for example someone who does not yet have the approval letter but earns above the threshold. Check which route the eligibility checker offers you, since the ICP and GDRFA systems decide the final outcome.
Who issues the letter?
It depends on the licensing authority:
| Where you practise | Regulator you will usually deal with |
|---|---|
| Dubai | Dubai Health Authority (DHA) |
| Abu Dhabi | Department of Health (DOH) |
| Sharjah and Northern Emirates | MOHAP and the local authority, such as the Sharjah Health Authority |
| Federal facilities | MOHAP |
Rules between these bodies are not identical, so ask your HR department which letter the authority will issue for a Golden Visa and how long it takes.
Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Staff
Nurses are the group where online advice is most confused. Here is what can be confirmed.
Dubai Health: 10-year visa for long-serving nurses
On International Nurses Day, 12 May 2025, Dubai announced a 10-year Golden Visa for nurses who have completed more than 15 years of service with Dubai Health, under directives from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Reports at the time said more than 1,800 nurses were eligible to apply, and later reports said more than 1,400 had received the visa. The visa can extend to immediate family, who may apply for dependent Golden Visas. Midwives were also recognised in reports of the programme.
This is an employer-linked recognition scheme. It is not a general right for every nurse in the UAE, and your HR team or the Dubai Health portal is the place to confirm your eligibility.
Salary route for nurses
If a nurse earns AED 30,000 or more per month with a bachelor’s degree and a valid UAE employment contract, the skilled professional route in our requirements guide may apply. Most staff nurses earn below this level, so this route fits senior nurses, nurse managers and specialists more often. Some guides also mention a skill-level classification requirement, so check the current ICP eligibility checker rather than relying on a blog.
Experience-based claims
Some websites say nurses need five years of experience, and others say fifteen. The fifteen-year figure is tied to the Dubai Health announcement above. The five-year figure comes from older commercial guides and we could not link it to a current official source. Treat it as unverified.
Pharmacists, dentists, physiotherapists and technicians
The UAE Government portal does not name these professions in the Golden Visa categories. They may qualify through the salary route, through a nomination, or through a government recognition scheme, depending on their situation. Dentists and some specialists may also be considered under the specialised talent route if the relevant authority issues a recommendation. There is no published rule that guarantees it.
Humanitarian Pioneers and Frontline Heroes
The UAE Government portal lists a Golden Visa category for Humanitarian Pioneers and Frontline Heroes with 10-year validity. The requirements it describes are certificates of appreciation, humanitarian contribution documentation or at least five years of service. The portal does not say that every healthcare worker qualifies.
Commercial guides add that in this category the health authority, such as MOHAP, initiates the nomination, so an individual cannot simply apply on their own. This matches the general principle of our Golden Visa nomination guide, which explains how nomination routes work.
Route Comparison Table
| Route | Who it suits | Key requirement | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exceptional Talent (doctors) | Licensed doctors and specialists | Practising licence plus approval or recommendation letter | 10 years |
| Skilled professional salary route | Senior clinicians and managers | Monthly salary from AED 30,000, bachelor’s degree, valid contract | 10 years |
| Dubai Health nurse recognition | Nurses with more than 15 years at Dubai Health | Service record confirmed by Dubai Health | 10 years |
| Frontline Heroes / humanitarian | Staff recognised for exceptional service | Certificates or at least 5 years of service, nomination by the authority | 10 years |
Documents to Prepare
Gather these before you start. Exact lists change by category, so confirm in the application portal.
- Passport valid for at least six months, with a recent photo on a white background.
- Current visa and Emirates ID if you live in the UAE.
- Practising licence from your health authority (DHA, DOH, MOHAP or the Sharjah authority).
- Approval or recommendation letter from the authority or employer, where your route requires one.
- Attested degree certificates. See our guide to certificate attestation in the UAE if your degree was issued abroad.
- Employment contract and salary proof, such as payslips or bank statements, for the salary route.
- Experience letters for the specialised and recognition routes.
- Medical fitness test. Read our UAE visa medical fitness test guide.
- Health insurance. Check the rules in the mandatory health insurance guide, since the requirement depends on your emirate and sponsor.
Step-by-Step Application Process
- Check your category. Use the ICP eligibility checker or ask your employer’s PRO team to confirm which route applies.
- Collect the approval or nomination letter if your category needs it. This is often the slowest step, so start first.
- Prepare and attest documents.
- Apply through the right channel. Applications go through the ICP smart services portal, or through GDRFA if you are in Dubai.
- Pay the government fees. Our requirements guide records roughly AED 350 for nomination, roughly AED 100 for application and roughly AED 100 for issuance. Fees can change, so check the portal before paying.
- Complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics.
- Receive the visa and Emirates ID. Our requirements guide reports about 19 to 28 working days for complete applications, and about 30 to 45 working days where a ministerial or council endorsement is needed. Treat these as typical ranges and not guarantees.
What Changes by Emirate
The Golden Visa is a federal product, but licensing, endorsement and some announcements are local.
- Dubai. The Dubai Health nurse scheme applies to Dubai Health employees. GDRFA handles Dubai applications.
- Abu Dhabi. DOH is the regulator, and some endorsements come from it. Abu Dhabi has its own government health employer announcements from time to time.
- Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. MOHAP and the local authority are involved, and processing times can differ.
If you changed emirates or employers, check that your licence is transferred or re-issued before applying, because the application relies on a valid licence.
Family, Renewal and Job Changes
- Family. A Golden Visa holder can sponsor family members. Read our UAE family visa sponsorship guide for the document list.
- Job changes. In many categories the visa is not tied to a single employer, but for salary-based routes you must keep meeting the conditions at renewal. Our requirements guide notes that eligibility is reassessed at each renewal.
- Licence lapses. If your practising licence expires or is suspended, tell your PRO team before renewal, as it can affect a category that depends on the licence.
- Absence. Check the rules on time spent outside the UAE before long career breaks.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming all nurses qualify. The Dubai scheme is for long-serving Dubai Health nurses.
- Using an old salary figure. Always check the current threshold on the official portal.
- Applying without the approval letter when your route needs one.
- Unattested degrees. Foreign degrees need attestation before submission.
- Mixing up routes. A doctor on the specialised route does not need the AED 30,000 salary, but a salary-route applicant does.
- Trusting unofficial advice that guarantees approval. Final decisions rest with ICP, GDRFA and the relevant authority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Golden Visa category specifically for healthcare professionals?
Not as a single named category on the UAE Government portal. Doctors are named under Exceptional Talent or Rare Specialisations, and other healthcare professionals usually use the salary route, a nomination or a recognition scheme.
Do doctors need a minimum salary for the Golden Visa?
Sources that describe the specialised talent route say no minimum salary applies, because eligibility rests on the practising licence and the approval letter. The AED 30,000 monthly salary applies to the skilled professional route.
Which letter does a doctor need?
Our requirements guide records an approval letter from the Ministry of Health and Prevention authorising UAE practice. In Abu Dhabi, some sources say a DOH endorsement may be used. Confirm with your health authority and employer.
Can nurses get a Golden Visa?
Yes, in some cases. Dubai announced a 10-year Golden Visa for nurses with more than 15 years of service at Dubai Health in May 2025. Other nurses may qualify through the salary route or through a nomination.
How many years of experience does a nurse need?
There is no single official number for all nurses. The 15-year figure belongs to the Dubai Health scheme. Claims of five years on commercial sites are not confirmed by a current official source.
Can my family get a Golden Visa too?
Golden Visa holders can sponsor family members, and the Dubai Health announcement said immediate family could apply for dependent Golden Visas. Requirements for each dependant still apply.
How long is the healthcare Golden Visa valid?
The categories discussed in this guide are 10-year visas, according to the UAE Government portal. Eligibility is reassessed at renewal.
How long does it take?
Our requirements guide reports about 19 to 28 working days for most complete applications, and 30 to 45 working days where an endorsement is needed. Delays usually come from missing letters or unattested documents.
Where do I apply?
Through the ICP smart services portal, or through GDRFA if you live in Dubai. Your hospital’s PRO team can submit it for you.
Do I need health insurance?
Insurance rules depend on your emirate and sponsor status. Read the mandatory health insurance guide and confirm with your insurer before the visa is issued.
If you are planning a home purchase after relocating to the UAE for a new healthcare role, this guide on getting a mortgage during probation or after a job change in the UAE explains what banks require.
What if my licence is from another country?
You need a valid UAE practising licence from the local health authority before the approval letter can be issued. Each authority has its own licensing exam and verification process.
If you plan to open your own clinic, lab or health-tech company, the corporate tax position of the licence matters as much as the visa. Our sister site Qaspro Global covers one Abu Dhabi option in its guide to Masdar City Free Zone company setup.
